Rigon adds super final victory
Anderlecht's Davide Rigon won his third Superleague super final of the year at Adria after beating FC Basel's Max Wissel in a closely fought contest
As top points scorer of the day - including a dominant win in the opening race - Rigon started the five lap 'dash for cash' from pole position just ahead of day-long rival, John Martin (Beijing Guoan).
Despite saving new tyres for the super final, both front row men started poorly. A great getaway from Wissel demoted Martin to third before the six-car pack hit the first corner, and a brave attempt around the outside of Turn 1 nearly earned the young German the lead. But Rigon repelled several attempts from Wissel during the opening few laps to win the sprint comfortably.
Wissel - who was starting his seventh super final this year - came home in second, just ahead of a charging Ben Hanley (Olympiacos). Hanley, having failed to beat Martin into Turn 1 on the opening lap, went wheel-to-wheel with the Beijing car down the back straight before forcing his way through at Turn 2. The Australian momentarily took to the grass, but recovered to finish fourth.
Race two winner Marcos Martinez (Sevilla) finished fifth after a poor start, whilst Frederic Vervisch (Liverpool) struggled to match the leaders' pace on old tyres and finished last.
With neither Yelmer Buurman (AC Milan) nor Craig Dolby (Tottenham Hotspur) qualifying for the super sinal, third-placed Anderlecht now lies only 12 points behind new championship leader Tottenham ahead of the series' next round at Portimao.
