Revised Champ Car points system

The Champ Car World Series has revised its scoring system for 2004. The new system, designed "to promote racing," will award points to the first 20 finishers. The race winner will score 31 points and the runner-up 27. The points will then decrease by two through the rest of the top 10, and by one through positions 11-20. As before, supplementary points will also be awarded

A point will be awarded for leading one or more laps, another for the fastest lap, and another to the driver who improves the most positions from his or her grid slot. There will no longer be a score for the most laps led in a race.

One championship point will be awarded to the fastest driver in the Friday and Saturday qualifying sessions on road and street circuits, and one for the fastest qualifier on an oval.

"We firmly believe that this new system will be better for our fans," said series senior VPO John Lopes. "The point for leading a lap will add an element of strategy and the point for fastest lap provides incentive for every driver on every lap, regardless of position."
