Renault to launch American championships

Renault Sport Technologies has appointed Race Team Promotions to launch and operate three one-make single-seater championships in the USA. Series for Formula Renault 1600 and Formula Renault 2000 will launch this year, with Formula Renault V6 to follow in 2005. RTP has secured a commercial arrangement with Tatuus covering importation of its Italian-made chassis

RST has been evaluating series promoters for a while with a view to establishing new single-seater championships in the USA and Canada, as part of an expanding international strategy. RST is responsible for the French manufacturer's range of Formula Renault racecars currently comprising FR1600 (112bhp), FR2000 (180bhp) and FRV6 (370bhp), and its promotional formulae are already run in 22 countries.

"We are the world's biggest single-seater race car constructor, and we owe it to ourselves to be present on the American market, even though Renault has no commercial presence there as a brand," said Jean-Paul Mari, RST's competition and communications director.

"The creation of a range of single-seater championships in North America is based solely on our desire to expand our sales of competition products. In no way does it signal a change in the strategy of the Renault Group itself vis-à-vis the North American market."
