Newman shades Busch

NASCAR Nextel Cup stars Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch predictably battled out the opening round of the International Race of Champions at Daytona, with Newman coming out on top after a thrilling pass in the dying seconds of the race

Newman slipped past Busch on the dash to the chequered flag to win to win by 0.035secs. Entering the tri-oval, Newman ducked his car underneath the yellow line to pass Busch. Officials ruled the pass legal because Busch blatantly blocked Newman's attempt to pass.

"I could've leaned into him and spun him coming to the line, but that's not the way to win because he was blocking me down," said Newman.

Busch's view was: "I was in the middle of the race track and I went to go down to the yellow line and I left just enough room I guess. I thought I left no room. The way it went, I'm just as much at fault as he is. I'm a bit upset with myself, and maybe the call that was made. But it's more myself because I left the door open."

Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson and World of Outlaws star Steve Kinser, the only non-NASCAR driver to make the top five, were next across the line.
