Renault takes over RPM's World Series brand
Renault Sport Technologies and RPM, the World Series by Nissan series promoter, are to merge their respective European single-seater racing championships, starting in 2005, to make way for two disciplines: the World Series by Renault (which will replace the Renault V6 Eurocup) and the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup. Renault-owned Nissan will focus its future motorsport programme on production-based competition such as rally-raids
Renault says that this decision is a consequence of the abundance of series currently competing in the European high-performance single-seater market, and the financial difficulties sometimes encountered by the teams as a consequence.
Dallara Automobili, the incumbent chassis supplier of RPM's Nissan categories, has won the contract to supply the new World Series by Renault ahead of Tatuus, its rival Italian company which supplies the current Renault V6 single-seater. The 450bhp Nissan World Series and the 370bhp Formula Renault V6 classes will be replaced by a redesigned racecar, based on the current Dallara chassis and using a new, 420bhp version of the current Nissan-branded engine, with similar characteristics.
However development of the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup racecar will continue after the end of the 2004 European season for the purposes of the new North American Formula Renault V6 championship, which is scheduled to begin in 2005. In addition, the 250bhp World Series Light racecar will be cancelled in favour of the Tatuus-built, 196bhp Formula Renault 2000 chassis, of which almost 500 units have already been sold throughout the world.
The format of the 2005 World Series by Renault and the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup will be unveiled this summer.
