Qualifying: Jourdain stripped of pole
Michel Jourdain Jr continued his strong run of form in the Champ Car World Series by taking pole position for this weekend's race at Laguna Seca, only to be stripped of his time after his car failed technical inspection
The Mexican turned a series of fast laps Saturday to claim his second career Champ Car pole, only to learn a couple of hours later that his Lola-Ford had apparently weighed in at less than the regulation 1,550-pound minimum. The Mexican lost his Saturday time and will instead start 14th based on his Friday qualifying time.
Patrick Carpentier, who came within 0.045s on Saturday of matching Jourdain's 1m09.530s lap, was thus promoted to pole position from third on the grid. Bruno Junqueira maintains the outside front row spot based on his Friday provisional pole.
Paul Tracy qualified third, after his time of 1m09.671s was just pipped by team-mate Carpentier in the dying moments of the session. Sebastien Bourdais was fastest in the morning practice, but encountered an engine problem in qualifying and could only manage fourth.
Adrian Fernandez put his car in fifth, ahead of an impressive showing from rookie Mario Haberfeld in his Reynard. Briton Darren Manning claimed seventh position, to give the unpopular chassis two cars in the first four rows of the grid.
