Qualifying: Alesi comes out on top
After swapping the initiative throughout the weekend's four free practice sessions, the pressure was on Jordan new boy Jean Alesi to out qualify the man who filled his seat at Prost Heinz-Harald Frentzen. The German was 15th in fourth free practice with Alesi one spot behind
Here's how they fared in their first qualifying session with their new teams.
Alesi comes out for his first flying lap and jumps straight up to third place after fighting his Jordan around in 1m17.248s.
Frenzten takes to the track for the first time and immediately gets into trouble on the exit of the first corner after getting in the way of David Coulthard on his first flying lap. The German goes on to put in a lap of 1m18.566s, good enough for 11th, but 1.2s behind Alesi.
The Frenchman tries again, but is unable to improve and is then further hampered as his Jordan gets randomly ushered into the scrutineering bay.
Frentzen comes out for his second run and takes the fight to Alesi by jumping ahead of the Jordan man. H-HF puts in a time of 1m17.196s to go 15th, just one place ahead of his rival.
Frentzen out for his penultimate stint but is unable to improve and returns to the pits to make further changes to his AP04.
Alesi, on the other hand, takes to the track just seconds afterwards and reclaims the advantage. He shaves four tenths off his first flying lap with a time of 1m16.885s and jumps one place ahead of Frentzen in 15th. Team mate Trulli is nine places and 1.3s seconds ahead.
Changes made to Alesi's EJ11 obviously worked and he improves once again. The Frenchman finally manages to pull away from Frentzen with a lap of 1m16.471s to move him into 12th place.
Frentzen was unable to go faster on his final flying lap and settles for 16th place, albeit more than a second faster than team mate Luciano Burti.
