Peugeot go ever quicker in practice

Peugeot ramped up the pressure on their rival diesel counterparts Audi in the final practice session for the opening round of the Le Mans Series at Barcelona, as Pedro Lamy set a time of 1:32.797, 0.4s faster than his nearest rival on Saturday morning

As the French manufacturer continued to dominate proceedings in Spain, the scale of the task ahead of Audi, ahead of its first full factory European assault, became ever more clear as the new factory-backed Lola Aston Martin went second quickest in the hands of Stefan Mucke.

In fact the fastest Audi R10 TDI, that of Rinaldo Capello and Allan McNish, could only manage fourth fastest behind the second of the Peugeot 908s, driven by Pedro Lamy and Stephane Sarrazin.

Andre Premat was fifth fastest in the sister Audi.

The Van Merksteijn Motorsport Porsche Spyder RS continued to run things in the LMP2 category as Jos Verstappen put the car well among the LMP1 racers.

The closed-roof Lola, run by the Speedy Racing Team was second quickest.

Luc Alphand's Corvette was quickest in GT1 ahead of the Team Modena Aston Martin while Virgo Motorsport's Ferrari 430 GT topped the GT2 class.
