Pagenaud targets 2008 title
Simon Pagenaud believes he will be ready to challenge for the championship in his second year in the Champ Car World Series
The reigning Champ Car Atlantic champion is currently eighth in the points in his first CCWS season for Team Australia.
The Frenchman said he had already learnt a great deal in 2007 and felt that with another winter of testing behind him there was no reason why he shouldn't aim for the title next year.
"I really understand the racing now, really understand the strategy and everything," Pagenaud said.
"So I think next year, you know, by stepping back during the winter, when I'm going to jump in the car again, I think I should be ready for being a contender for the championship next year.
"That (preparation) was really the goal this year and to be able to win next year, so I think we have a chance."
Although Pagenaud has yet to take his first Champ Car podium, he has scored six top five finishes this year and started from the front row at Cleveland.
Team Australia took a step forward in competitiveness with the switch to the Panoz chassis for 2007, with Pagenaud's teammate Will Power winning twice and fighting for the championship until Sebastien Bourdais broke away from his rivals halfway through the season.
