One-off titanium components by laser
The Munich, Germany, divisions of industrial laser specialist Trumpf Lasertechnik and rapid prototyping systems supplier EOS are to collaborate to perfect a production system for direct metal laser-melting. This is a variation of the EOS direct metal laser-sintering (DMLS) system, in which metal powder free of binder or fluxing agent is completely melted by a scanning laser beam to build up 3D objects with properties of the original material
The process gives designers the possibility to build parts of almost any complexity in a wide range of metal materials. Trumpf and EOS see a wide application potential in the production of one-offs and small series of ultra-lightweight structures. To date, complex parts have been produced from titanium (Ti-Al6V4), stainless-steel (1.4404) and tool steel (1.2343). Further materials are currently being investigated.
The direct metal laser-melting method is based on process developments carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) in Aachen, Germany, which will continue to be involved in the further technology development of the two companies.
