On-form Andretti sets morning pace

Toronto winner Michael Andretti swapped public highway for the high banks of Michigan superspeedway, but proved he was still the man to beat in the FedEx CART series, when he posted fastest time in first practice for this weekend's Michigan 500.

The American headed up a Newman-Haas one-two, with a lap of 0m30.576, while team-mate Christian Fittipaldi was second on a lap of 0m30.874.

Helio Castroneves continued his recent form as he looks for his second CART win this season. The Penske driver was third, from last year's Michigan 'nearly man' Max Papis.

Championship leader Roberto Moreno emphasised the see-saw nature of the championship battle this season, by setting a practice time of 0m31.669, a full second off the front runners and good enough only for 21st place.

Dario Franchitti returned from his lightning visit to the UK for a Formula 1 test with Jaguar, and was still dialling himself back into oval racing. The Scot turned in the 11th fastest time in his Team KOOL Green Reynard-Honda.
