Ntl Racing: Thompson
James Thompson crowned his ultra successful British Touring Car Championship winning campaign by taking the National Racing Driver of the Year Award at the Autosport Awards evening on Sunday night
Autosport Awards
The Autosport Awards are a series of awards presented by motor racing magazine Autosport to drivers that have achieved significant milestones each season. Some of the presentations are selected by the general public via a reader's poll.
The Vauxhall ace, who is switching to the World Touring Car Championship next year, was presented with his trophy by world famous commentator Murray Walker.
"To be honest it has been a fantastic year," admitted Thompson as he reflected on his season. "The racing this year has been fantastic. I have been involved for 11 years and this year has been the most difficult with all the rule changes."
Thompson admitted that the satisfaction of beating last year's champion and Vauxhall team-mate Yvan Muller to the title after a season-long duel was particularly satisfying.
"It was, particularly after losing out to him last year," he added. "The good thing about having a classy team-mate is that when you beat him you feel you achieved something. Last year the English won the rugby but a Frenchman won the championship, this year it was the other way around!"
Speaking about his future switch to the WTCC, Thompson said: "I never thought I would be in a position to fight for the world championship, so it is great."
