New Year's Eve deadline for F1 French GP
The French GP has kept a 'provisional' listing on the 2004 F1 calendar, having been allocated July 4 to allow the British GP to move forward to July 11. However France will go without an F1 race next season unless the FIA receives confirmation before December 31 that a contract is in place between Formula One Management and the FFSA, its ASN. Furthermore, the event at Magny-Cours is now regarded as an 18th fixture, so all the teams must agree before it can be confirmed
Under the terms of the Concorde Agreement, the teams are committed to a maximum of 17 races in any season. There is provision for additional events to be held provided that the teams reach unanimous agreement.
The historic French fixture was thrown into doubt last month [Nov 24] when the Conseil General de la Nievre, the majority shareholder in the promoter, SAEMS Circuit de Nevers de Magny-Cours, stated that it did not expect to be able to pay outstanding fees to FOM within a timeframe established by the FIA.
