New Subaru for Winter

Last season's event winner Andy Burton, who has already taken four wins in 2004 in his unique Cosworth-powered Peugeot, will start as favourite for honours. However, 2003 runner-up Winter believes that his new machine can help him turn the tables on Burton

"The Subaru is completely different to the Ford Escort WRC we used last year," said Winter, who will be co-driven by Neil Dashfield. "There's a lot more suspension travel and the grip level is much higher. It even takes time to work out what all the buttons on the dashboard do!

"Andy is the benchmark that everyone has to aim for. Anyone who manages to stay with him will have had a very good day."

The Somerset Stages is the fourth round of the BTRDA Gold Star championship. Hyundai Accent WRC driver Graham Middleton currently enjoys an eight-point lead in the standings over Kevin Procter's Subaru Impreza.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V pilot John Perrott and Ford Focus WRC driver Theo Bengry are also set to challenge for honours, with both having performed well on the North Humberside Rally.
