Mosley rules out big rule changes

Max Mosley has put the brakes on any ideas that there may be further sweeping F1 rule changes in 2003. With meetings between the teams and the FIA planned for the period after the Brazilian GP, the FIA president has denied that the governing body is open to further wholesale changes. "The rules cannot be changed during the season without unanimous agreement and I think most of the teams will feel we need more time to see the full effect," he told sportbusiness.com.

"The new rules and procedures make it more probable that teams or drivers will make mistakes and give us a good race, as in Melbourne, but the best car-driver combinations will still be at or near the front most of the time and this is as it should be," said Mosley.

One of the rules the sport's governing body is currently refusing to back down on is the mandatory use of the HANS safety device. Despite problems encountered by some drivers recently an FIA spokesman said: "The evidence for a HANS device significantly improving driver safety is overwhelming. Such devices have been used in racing for over 10 years, approximately 3000 devices are currently in use and in the last two years accidents of all types in American racing have validated its performance."
