Moreno likely to step in for Fittipaldi

Robert Moreno is expected to fill in for injured Christian Fittipaldi at the Newman-Haas team this weekend

The Brazilian stepped in for Mark Blundell at the PacWest team after the Englishman crashed in testing at Gateway International Raceway - the same track where Fittipaldi crashed yesterday.

Fittipaldi is currently in a 'serious, but stable' condition in St Louis University hospital. He was kept in the neurological unit last night for observation and tests.

He will miss this weekend's race at Detroit, and the Newman-Haas team needs to find a suitable replacement quickly.

Moreno made a good impression on both the PacWest outfit he recently drove for, and the CART world, by achieving solid results for the team.

'He brought a lot of credit to PacWest and we will miss him,' said team owner Bruce McCaw last week.

'I hope one day we'll get the chance to do it again under different circumstances.'

How long Fittipaldi will be out of action is not yet known.
