Monza F2: Matheo Tuscher wins to keep title battle alive
Matheo Tuscher kept the Formula 2 championship battle alive by dominating a wet race one at Monza
Points leader Luciano Bacheta could only finish fourth after an eventful race.
Bacheta spent the opening laps clambering all over the back of leader Kevin Mirocha in a frantic battle.
Poleman Tuscher slid over the grass at the first corner trying to fend off Bacheta but soon recovered to dice with Christopher Zanella in frenetic fashion just behind the top two, while Mihai Marinescu gave chase.
Mirocha and Bacheta banged wheels as the latter tried to go around the outside into Ascari on lap five, sending the points leader through the gravel. Bacheta continued in second but fell back to fourth when he skated off at the Roggia a few laps later. Marinescu passed him too soon after.
Tuscher then took up the chase of Mirocha, twice passing him around the outside into the Parabolica. On the first occasion Mirocha was able to draft back ahead passing the pits, but second time around Tuscher broke clear and began to storm away.
Zanella was the only man who could keep Tuscher in sight as he demoted Mirocha to third and finished 2.8 seconds behind the victorious teenager.
Bacheta came home fourth, although he is one of several drivers who will be investigated post-race for how they rejoined after cutting chicanes.
With Marinescu losing ground with a trip through the Parabolica gravel, debutant Harald Schlegelmilch picked up fifth.
