Montoya picks up fourth CART win

Juan Montoya kept a cool head to pick up his fourth CART win at the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland

Gil de Ferran came in second, finishing more than 10 seconds behind the Columbian rookie.
He was followed by Michael Andretti, Paul Tracy and Al Unser Jr.

The race was shortened by 10 laps due to the lengthy weather delays, finishing after two hours.

Montoya, who scored the pole position in Saturday's qualifying, led without challenge until lap 31 when everyone had to stop to take on rain tyres.

The rainstorm which followed was fierce at the 2.106-mile temporary track. While the drivers were scrambling in and out of the pits the rain picked up.

On lap 34, the mayhem began as six cars either spun around on the track or smashed into the tyre barriers.

Tony Kanaan, Jimmy Vasser and Tarso Marques all slammed into the tyre walls at Turn eight, forcing the introduction of the Safety Car.

At the green flag on lap 50 Montoya led again while de Ferran and Tracy battled behind him, as the rain began to clear.

Within a few minutes de Ferran and a host of other drivers pitted to change back to slick tyres and grab fuel.

Paul Tracy and Michael Andretti both led the race while de Ferran and Montoya made stops.

Andrian Fernandez crashed as drivers were still completing their pit stops and the second caution period of the day slowed the field down once more.

With the restart on lap 68 Montoya battled with de Ferran for the lead and finally overtook him on lap 69.
Montoya increased his lead while the battle went on behind him.

CART officials decided to bring the race to an early end according to rules that state road course races will only run two hours.

Montoya picks up 22 points for the weekend.

With his second podium finish in two weeks Gil de Ferran is now second in the points, 25 points behind Montoya.

Dario Franchitti, who ended his day very early with a broken throttle linkage, falls to third place followed by Michael Andretti and Greg Moore.
