Montezemolo writes off GPWC initiative
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has accepted that it is no longer possible for GPWC Holdings, the Dutch-registered action group representing F1 manufacturers BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ferrari, Ford and Renault, to launch a 'breakaway' Grand Prix World Championship with which to replace F1. He has suggested that it is time for the companies involved to decide individually whether they should commit to the future
"We must not be dreamers, but very realistic," Montezemolo told Autosport. "I was extremely pleased about the Memorandum of Understanding we achieved at Christmas, because it was good for everybody. Unfortunately, for many reasons, it didn't work. This is a pity.
"I don't think it is possible to find another solution all together. Maybe, to save the future of F1, everybody has to take their own decisions - stop or commit. I don't see a different solution. What is for sure is that, after the end of 2007, we are free, we have no deal with anybody. After that, everybody can do whatever they want."
