Montezemolo is 'Autocar' Man of the Year
Luca di Montezemolo, the president of Italy's Ferrari Maserati Group, has been named as the 2002 'Man of the Year' by the influential UK weekly, AUTOCAR. The audience at the Marquee in Battersea Park, London, the traditional location of the annual prizegiving ceremony organised by the world's oldest automotive magazine, was told that the judges had been unanimous in their selection
The citation reads: "It is people who build success, not committees, nor processes. Our 'Man of the Year' rejoined Ferrari 10 years ago when it was in very poor shape. He took it by the scruff of the neck. He transformed the road cars, and overhauled the racing division. Now Ferrari makes magnificent cars again, and has won seven F1 Constructors and Drivers championships in the past four years. He has revitalised the name of Maserati, and its cars.
"Under the charismatic leadership of Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari has exceeded the wildest dreams of the tifosi, built the world's greatest car, breathed fresh life into Maserati and, through heavy investment in research and development, laid the foundation for a new generation of innovative cars. He understands the importance of the legend, the romance of Ferrari. Yet he is pragmatic at heart, and smart enough to understand that balancing these elements is perhaps his greatest management strength."
