McLaren Technology Centre on stream

The new McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK, will be "a major functional tool to ensure that we remain at the forefront of British engineering and technology, while helping to strengthen and develop the McLaren brand," said CEO Ron Dennis after the 500-hectare facility had been opened by HM The Queen on Wednesday. "It will also act as an incentive to attract and retain the best engineering talent in the world, and provide an impetus for the designers of the future."

The centre, designed by Lord Foster, already houses most of the McLaren Group's 900-strong workforce, including the McLaren Racing F1 team. It includes design studios, laboratories and research and testing capabilities, resources for electronics development, prototyping and production, and a visitor and learning area which is due to open later.

Representatives of the company's major shareholders, including DaimlerChrysler's Jürgen Schrempp and TAG Group president Mansour Ojjeh, welcomed The Queen who was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. The ceremony was attended by numerous leading motorsport figures.

McLaren Automotive, the production sports car division, took the opportunity to show its new Mercedes-Benz SLR 'supercar' to the royal party.
