Mansell quickest in second practice
Nigel Mansell topped the second free practice session for this weekend's inaugural GP Masters race at Kyalami, as laptimes for the event continued to tumble
Mansell went more than a second quicker than Christian Danner's best from the first free practice session this morning, beating fellow Brit Derek Warwick by nearly three tenths of a second to the fastest time.
Emerson Fittipaldi demonstrated that after deciding to race this weekend, he will be a genuine threat at the front, posting the third fastest time. Riccardo Patrese was fourth, ahead of Jan Lammers, who did not set a time in the first session of the day after steering problems.
Less than four seconds covered the first 14 drivers of the 15 who took part in the session.
However, there was then a four-second gap back to the last place runner - 1980 World Champion Alan Jones. His best lap of the afternoon was eight seconds off Mansell's best.
There will be a further free practice sessions tomorrow morning, before qualifying takes place in the afternoon.
