Kenny Brack triumphs at Indy 500

Kenny Brack emerged victorious in the crash-filled Indianapolis 500 this afternoon

The AJ Foyt driver finished ahead of Jeff Ward and Billy Boat, and benefited from Robby Gordon running out of fuel with just one lap to go.

Gordon was heading to victory in the dying stages, leading the race for the first time when the then-leaders pitted while under a yellow flag because of Mark Dismore's crash.

As the chequered flag was approaching, Gordon's hopes of having enough fuel faded, and as he went into the pits, Brack sped on to claim victory.

Crashes put an end to a number of the early leaders.

Pole-winner Arie Luyendyk, who was competing in the final race of his career, was ahead for 63 laps, but hit the wall as he tried to move to the inside of Tyce Carlson.

This gave the lead to Greg Ray, but as he was leaving the pits he hit Mark Dismore, who was coming into the pit lane.

The new leader was veteran Eddie Cheever, who was hoping to become the first consecutive Indy 500 winner for nearly 30 years.

But, once Brack had overtaken him, the ex-Formula One driver crashed out.

Then Dismore's crash put Gordon at the front, but his agonising retirement soon handed Brack the win.
