Kanaan quickest in practice

Tony Kanaan was fastest in Saturday morning practice for the Texaco Grand Prix of Houston

Last season's Rookie of the Year was nearly 0.3s faster than the sensational Richie Hearn, who has looked like a top five contender all weekend for the small Della Penna team.

Juan Montoya had a disappointing session and was only 19th fastest despite topping the timesheets in first qualifying. His title rival Dario Franchitti was fourth quickest behind Greg Moore. The Forsythe team are looking strong, with Patrick Carpentier seventh fastest despite having to use his back-up car.

The session was interrupted by a collision involving Max Papis and Andrea Montermini. Friday hero Naoki Hattori ended practice in a more traditional position, down in 24th, but will still hold fifth on the grid unless others improve in this afternoon's qualifying runs. Given the way the track was improved over the weekend, that seems highly likely.
