ISC to stage US 'Centennial of Speed'
International Speedway Corporation is to mount a year-long 'Centennial of Speed' promotion to mark the centenary of an event in 1903 that helped to start American motorsport. The initiative, to be launched during the 2003 Daytona Speedweeks, will include merchandising, track celebrations and other fan involvements. ISC will work closely with local civic groups and the programme will be supported throughout the year by its 12 motorsport circuits nationwide.
On March 26, 1903, the first automotive contest held on a beach in Volusia County, Florida (now the home of ISC's Daytona International Speedway), resulted in Alexander Winton's 'Bullet #1' car defeating H.T. Thomas's Oldsmobile 'Pirate' by 0.2sec, at an average of over 57mph.
ISC Publications will launch a dedicated website for the venture, and there will be on-air radio support from MRN, the ISC-owned sports radio network that promotes itself as 'The Voice of NASCAR'. The initiative will draw from ISC's extensive archive, which includes more than 2.5 million racing photographs and 12,000 hours of racing videos from major races throughout the 20th century.
