IPS Gateway: Simmons takes win

Mark Taylor and Brandon Erwin collided while racing for the lead on the next-to-last lap, allowing Jeff Simmons through to take a surprising victory Saturday in the Gateway 100, an IRL Infiniti Pro Series race at Gateway International Raceway

Taylor bobbled on the 79th lap of the 80-lap race, sliding high and allowing Erwin to close rapidly. The two cars made contact after Erwin's car hit the wall. Neither driver was injured, but Simmons - who was third at the time - won under yellow.

"It was totally my fault," said Taylor, the series points leader. "I made a mistake, ran wide, came back down to the inside, and Brandon was right behind me. He got along the outside, and I tried to give him enough room because I realized he was there."

The two cars touched, sending Taylor into the inside retaining wall and Erwin into the outside wall.

"I just didn't give him enough room," Taylor continued. "I ruined his day and ruined mine, as well. I'm just really sorry for what happened."

Erwin, who won the pole Friday in his comeback from a crash at Michigan, said Taylor saw him coming. "I don't know why he reacted like he did," Erwin said. "He came right down in front of me. I tried to make a move to go around the outside, but there was no room."

Simmons, who had the best view of the crash, posted his first win in the IRL's feeder series. "I was basically just waiting for something like that to happen," he said. "I was just biding my time and hoping something would happen in traffic."

Taylor's points lead over Simmons has now been cut to 91 points.
