Henry Surtees joins F2 field

Henry Surtees, son of former world champion John Surtees, has become the latest addition to the revived Formula Two series

The 17-year-old moves into F2 having competed in Formula BMW and Formula Renault in Britain for the past two seasons. He also took a class victory in a one-off British Formula 3 appearance at the end of 2008.

"F2 is a great opportunity for me," said Surtees. "It is true that times are difficult for drivers to find sponsorship, so the concept of F2 has come at the right time.

"Lots of talented drivers are interested so it is going to be a tough year but such great competition is exactly what I am looking for. I am really excited about 2009 and now I just cannot wait to see the car."

Jonathan Palmer, head of series organiser MotorSport Vision, was delighted that Surtees had chosen F2 for his next step.

"I have been monitoring Henry's progress ever since he raced karts with my son Jolyon," said Palmer.

"I was always impressed with his technical approach and he has clearly inherited and learnt a lot from his father John. F2 is the ideal formula for Henry as he continues in his quest to reach Formula One and it is extremely exciting to add another former F1 surname to the swelling F2 grid for 2009."

Surtees is the second son of a former F1 driver to join the F2 field, alongside Martin Brundle's son Alex.

The new-style F2 series kicks off at Valencia at the head of May.
