Government to invest in UK motorsport engineering?
Sports minister Richard Caborn has given the strongest hint yet that the British government will invest in a 'centre of excellence' for motorsport engineers at Silverstone. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live this morning, he said: "We're considering an argument to have a major training centre for engineers to feed into this industry, which is under tremendous competition. We want to make sure that Britain continues to be at the leading edge of the automobile industry."
He added: "Jackie Stewart [president of the BRDC] and his colleagues are upgrading Silverstone and are asking for a partnership with the government to make an educational centre for engineers, and develop it as a real centre of excellence."
Caborn also congratulated the organisers of the British GP, despite the criticism from F1 commercial chief, Bernie Ecclestone. "It went incredibly well and all the organisers should be congratulated. I think the vast majority of racegoers said it was tremendous improvement. It was just unfortunate that Bernie got caught in an airfield about 10 minutes away."
He also sympathised with race promoter Rob Bain, who resigned from his Octagon post yesterday following Eccelstone's comments.
