GK in the UK

It wasn't possible for any of the Champ Car drivers or teams to obtain any real measure of the Rockingham oval in Thursday's opening day of practice. Occasional light rain and difficulty in drying the track meant the drivers were able to run only a handful of practice laps at reduced speed so that nobody has any real idea about how the track will or won't work on raceday

"It's going to be a very busy track because you're turning all the time," said championship leader Kenny Brack. "The corners go by in a hurry but we only ran around in second or third gear. Probably when we get up to speed there will probably only be one line. The front straightaway is the longest straight. The rest of the time you are always turning the wheel. The width of the track is fine. There should be room to race and pass. There are also a few bumps, but nothing serious."

Dario Franchitti was less sure than Brack about Rockingham's qualities.

"It's very frustrating that we haven't been able to run any serious laps," said Franchitti. "We had a great crowd today and they got to see the cars up close and get in close contact with the drivers. I think they really enjoyed that. There are a couple of things they need to tidy up. The grass needs to be moved back in a few places but I'm sure we'll be making some recommendations after the race and I'm sure they'll respond in the right way."

Helio Castroneves, meanwhile, thinks Rockingham will be very fast.

"I think it's going to be constant high speed all the way around," said Castroneves. "I don't think there will be any downshifting like there is on some ovals. The banking helps a little. I think it's going to be similar to Germany which means it's going to be fast but unlike Germany you're always turning. There's no real straightaway. It seems pretty much like Indianapolis because you're always getting ready for a corner. I think it will be very interesting."

Max Papis may have been the most optimistic of the drivers: "I think it will quite a good track for racing. Through the first three turns you are always turning. You never have the steering straight. But it's wide and smooth. I think it should be a very good track for racing."

Everyone hopes the weather will be much better tomorrow so that the drivers can get in enough practice to properly prepare for the race.
