Ganassi backs series to the hilt

Team boss Chip Ganassi has underlined his support for CART by announcing that he is sticking with the FedEx Champ Car series next year rather than making a full-time switch to the rival Indy Racing League

CART has suffered a number of body blows recently, and its engine regulations beyond 2002 are currently in a state of flux. But, despite this, Ganassi's quadruple championship-winning team will run Kenny Brack in CART next season, and expect to announce its second driver at Fontana - the smart money is on Tony Kanaan for the seat.

"Our team and our sponsors believe the FedEx Series features the top open-wheel competition and exciting racing, and we're committed to helping CART remain the premiere open-wheel series in 2002 and beyond," said Ganassi. "Team Target has experienced much success in CART over the past decade or so, and we're confident that trend will continue."

His team will also compete in the Indianapolis 500 for the third consecutive year, with a two-car team planned for 2002. Ganassi is considering competing in one or two Indy Racing League events to prepare for the 500.
