Frentzen secures Speedcar pole

Former Williams Formula One teammates Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jacques Villeneuve locked out the front row for the first ever Speedcar night race at Losail in Qatar on Friday evening

Frentzen leapt to the top of the times in the opening 10 minutes and enforced his advantage by going even faster with five minutes to go.

He saved his very best until his last lap, however, a 2:03.967 effort that was 0.134 quicker than Villeneuve's best time in the closing seconds.

Jean Alesi will start third, having looked to be Frentzen's closest challenger early on. But he went off the track twice on one lap, and had to be recovered by a safety vehicle from the gravel trap, ruining his session.

MotoGP rider Marco Melandri was the star of the session in his first Speedcar appearance. The Italian spun three times, but he was quick when he didn't. He will start fourth, ahead of Gianni Morbidelli and Johnny Herbert, who were separated by 0.001 seconds.

The opening Speedcar race will start at 21.40 local time tonight.
