France, New Zealand on pole each

Title rivals Team France and Team New Zealand will have one pole position each for tomorrow's (Sunday) A1GP races at Eastern Creek in Australia

In sprint race qualifying, it was no surprise that Loic Duval - the fastest man in practice - came out on top after two clean laps. Even he couldn't beat his time from the first segment, though Neel Jani (Team Switzerland) and Adrian Zaugg (Team South Africa) challenged him in both segments.

With the teams waiting until the last few minutes to head out for qualifying, one or two were caught out.

Team Great Britain's Robbie Kerr actually came around too late to start his flying lap before the chequered flag, and this put him on the back foot for the second segment, which didn't appear to be faster if Duval's time was anything to go by.

Team Germany's Michael Ammermuller was also caught out by an unexpected yellow flag in the first segment (caused by Chris Alajajian's crash in the Team Lebanon car) and was left at the back at the halfway point.

The German recovered in the second segment to move up to seventh overall after going out early to ensure a clear run.

Team China's Franky Cheng topped the first segment of feature race qualifying, which suggested he would have good pace when everyone switched to new tyres in the second segment.

The track got slower as temperatures rose during the second segment, which played well into the hands of Reid, who went out earlier than the rest of the front-runners. Jani, Kerr and Cheng were among the last to set times and had to settle for second, third and fourth respectively.

While Cheng was delighted with Team China's improved display, Duval was an unexpectedly slow fifth in feature race qualifying. The Frenchman offered no excuses, but knows his best chance of breaking his A1GP winning duck will come in the sprint race.
