Former boss happy for Allmendinger

RuSPORT team boss Carl Russo congratulated AJ Allmendinger on his first Champ Car victory at Portland, ten days after he fired the young American in favour of Cristiano da Matta

Russo had been largely responsible for Allmendinger's rapid rise from karting to Champ Car, guiding his protege through the junior ranks and setting up RuSPORT around him.

They won the 2003 Toyota Atlantic title and the 2004 Champ Car Rookie of the Year crown together, but the relationship had become tense in recent months.

"We won a lot of championships together and I think the world of him," said Russo. "I couldn't be happier for him, he's a tremendously talented guy.

"But it was time for both of us to go and find different environments, and we have. He's obviously out demonstrating what he can do and hopefully Cristiano will help us take both our cars to the front.

"I think both situations are going to work out well."

Ironically Allmendinger ended up battling for Portland victory with his erstwhile RuSPORT teammate Justin Wilson.

"I think it's a RuSPORT one-two...," Russo joked. "I think AJ's a great driver, and Justin's a great driver. It's poetic justice that we've seen this fight."

Wilson added that Allmendinger's Portland form proved that RuSPORT's decision had been in the American's best interests.

"AJ was on his game all weekend, and I think a fresh start was what was needed," said Wilson. "I'm really pleased for him. He's obviously very happy now.

"We're still good friends away from the track but we want to beat each other on it and it's always been the same."
