Foggy puts four-wheeled ambitions on hold

Four-time World Superbike Champion Carl Fogarty says he has not set his heart on a switch to four-wheeled racing - but the recently-retired 'Blackburn Bullet' has not ruled out a move in the future

Autosport International

Autosport International is a four-day event motorsport event that includes a two-day trade show for industry professionals and a two-day public show.

Speaking at Autosport International 2001, Fogarty, who was forced to retire from two-wheeled racing after breaking his upper arm last year, said: "I won't rule out a switch to car racing in the future, and there's certainly been a lot of interest, but my heart's got to be in it.

"I had a couple of tests at Donington Park and they went really well, but it's not what I want to do at the moment. My priority at the moment is to get my arm working properly again, but next year or the year after, who knows?"

Fogarty, who will have another operation on his arm next week, will carry out an ambassadorial role for Ducati this year. The Lancastrian is synonymous with the Italian marque and is rumoured to be setting up his own WSB team in 2002.

"I suppose I'll just have to stand around and smile a lot for Ducati this season," he quipped. "But seriously, it was a very easy decision to retire. When you can only use one arm properly, it's impossible to race a bike - the decision was made for me.

"I don't really feel I've been away yet, because I've been so busy, but when the season starts, maybe it'll hit home and I'll miss it."

'Foggy' makes another appearance at Autosport International 2001 tomorrow (Saturday).
