FIA likely to insist on 16-round WRC
The FIA World Rally Championship Commission has asked for more detail from the factory teams which last week submitted their response to World Motor Sport Council proposals to alter the calendar, technical regulations and reconnaissance procedure. In the meantime, reports AUTOSPORT, Commission president Shekhar Mehta said that the WMSC's resolution to implement a 16-round WRC in 2004 is unlikely to change
Mehta expressed frustration with the time taken by the teams to respond to the WMSC's ideas. "We need more detail on the table and we need it quickly," he said. "I was supposed to be sent this letter on July 26. I actually received it on Monday of this week. That's eight weeks since the Council's original proposals and its request for an urgent response."
Mehta believes that, while the teams might raise valid points on some issues, the 16-round 2004 calendar will be implemented. He concluded: "I think the decision on the 16 rallies is a World Council matter. The Commission made a recommendation, but it was rejected by the Council. I don't see it going back on that unless there are compelling reasons."
