FIA includes Canada at F1 promoters meeting
The FIA invited the promoter of the Canadian GP at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Norman Legault, to Friday's annual meeting of the F1 world championship promoters, despite the omission of his event from the 2004 calendar. Magny-Cours chief Roland Hodel also attended and took the opportunity to repeat his confidence that the circuit would renew its FOM contract to stage the French GP
Hodel told French daily L'Equipe: "The French GP is included on the provisional calendar alongside the name of Magny-Cours. Renegotiating a contract is normal. We're confident that our contract will be renewed through 2005."
Meanwhile a legal action seeking to get the Canadian GP exempted from the federal anti-tobacco legislation failed last week. Two Canadian businessmen argued that the legislation violated the rights of the promoter to stage the race, and that it would damage the Montreal economy. The judge, Justice Jean Crepeau, refused to consider these arguments and described them as a "cry of despair" that could not be considered by the court.
