F1's 19-race calendar

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has approved a provisional 19-race 2005 Formula 1 World Championship calendar. The schedule, unprecedented in size, includes a provisional July 3 date for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The event is subject to the circuit's owners, the BRDC, securing a commercial agreement with Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Management company before the next meeting of the World Council, on December 10

Ecclestone is believed to be offering the BRDC a one-year deal with an option for a further six years, while the BRDC favours a two-year agreement. "We can't negotiate any more on this," said Ecclestone. "They are on the calendar for the moment but we have to have a decision on this soon."

The FIA also needs to conclude a commercial agreement with the teams in order to run 19 rounds in 2005. The current Concorde Agreement, by which the sport is run, calls for a limit of 16 races on the calendar, and the teams require a financial supplement in order to compete in extra events.
