F1 in Schools goes to US
The first American Jaguar F1 Team in Schools CAD/CAM competition is taking place (June 20-24) during the US Technology Student Association's national conference in Nashville, TN, with 20 teams entered. Sponsored by Jaguar North America, UGS-PLM Solutions, Pathrace, Denford, Pitsco and BAE Systems, the competition, in which pupils work with CAD/CAM software to design and build model F1 racecars, started in the UK and has also been held in South Africa, Australia and Asia
The competition is designed to promote engineering as a desirable career option for the students. "This is an exciting educational partnership," commented CJ O'Donnell, the executive VP of marketing and sales for Jaguar North America. "The Jaguar F1 Team in Schools Design Challenge is an ideal venue for students to explore the world of automotive design and engineering which may potentially lead to future careers in the industry."
Students create a 3D prototype as they work through designing, manufacturing, assembling, testing and racing their models, which are powered by model aircraft engines. The judging is based on safety, aerodynamics, engineering, aesthetics, quality and manufacturing, race times, and presentation. Students must also create a portfolio and give an oral presentation to the judging panel.
