Eng takes second pole at Silverstone

Philipp Eng took his second career Formula 2 pole position at Silverstone today

The 20-year-old Austrian won on his only other pole in the series, at Brands Hatch last year, and will start from the front in race two on Sunday after pipping Jolyon Palmer by 0.020s.

He did just one flying lap on the scrubbed set of tyres at the start and sat in the pits for most of the half hour, before venturing out towards the end to make the most of the new tyres and three uses of the boost button.

"It was very close, my lap was very good and I boosted very well," said Eng. "I'm happy that I'm on pole because my first qualifying was not that good, I was only fourth."

Palmer, who took the day's first pole with a last-gasp effort, left it late to mount his assault on Eng's benchmark, but fell just short of clinching the top spot again.

Dean Stoneman will start from the head of row two in both races tomorrow after qualifying third again.

Jack Clarke and Johan Jokinen finished up fourth and fifth after both had turns at holding provisional pole before a flurry of improvements in the last five minutes.

Tom Gladdis completes the third row after easily his best qualifying session to date, with Will Bratt, Sergei Afanasiev, Kazim Vasiliauskas and Mihai Marinescu completing the top 10.
