Dominguez returns to Forsythe
Mario Dominguez has rejoined the Forsythe team for at least the first three rounds of this year's Champ Car World Series
The Mexican drove for the team in 2005 and in early 2006, but was sacked in favour of AJ Allmendinger last June, shortly after colliding with teammate Paul Tracy for the second time in four races.
"I couldn't believe it when I got a call from (Forsythe general manager) Neil Micklewright," said Dominguez.
"It's a wonderful opportunity given to me again by Gerry Forsythe and Forsythe Championship Racing.
"It's been a tough off-season. I've been working really, really hard every single day to try to get sponsors, to try to get what's needed in order for me to race in Champ Car.
"But the fact that I'm going to be able to start the season with Forsythe, with a team that would be like coming back home, it's just the best news possible I could have ever gotten.
"Last year there was a lot of unfinished business at Forsythe. I believe this is the year to make it up to them and win races."
Forsythe had hinted earlier in the winter that they would downscale to a one-car team unless they could find a fully-funded driver, but recently ordered an additional chassis.
Early rumours suggested that Mexican David Martinez or IRL IndyCar racer Buddy Rice (who deputised for the injured Tracy in Mexico City last year) might be destined for this car before Dominguez was announced yesterday.
"Our past experience with Mario indicated that his style of debrief and the way in which he works with the engineers and with his teammate with regards to the set-ups is very good," said Micklewright.
"I would like to reiterate, despite what may be thought or said about Paul being outspoken, he says what he's thinking at the time, but there is a genuine affection between he and Mario. They do get along very well."
Dominguez already has experience of the new Panoz DP01 having tested for RuSPORT earlier this year. His Forsythe deal presently only covers the first three rounds of the 2007 season, but could be extended if sponsors Telmex are satisfied with initial results.
