Dario Franchitti Q&A

Since joining Team Green back in 1998, Dario Franchitti has been one of the leading lights of the CART series. And after winning last time out in Vancouver, he currently lies second in this year's championship standings to Cristiano da Matta. However, his contract with Green runs out at the end of the year and like many of his peers he's yet to announce his plans for 2002.

"At the moment nothing has been decided. I've spoken to many teams, but we're not talking contracts as most of them have yet to decide what their plans are for next year too. But my motivation right now is to win what I'm currently doing."

"We'll have to see what happens. I'm on the market."

"You have to say that he's done a good job of getting that car to his liking and he certainly made the most of that. But over the course of a championship it's about maintaining your momentum and I think we've seen how hard that can be with his two retirements in the past two races. Certainly we were some way behind in April and May but we've pretty much caught up now and there's still plenty of races yet to go."

"Last year the support from the fans was fantastic and that made the event pretty special for me. In 2001, the Rockingham facility was only just about complete, but I was there for the ASCAR race last weekend and I was like a different place. I think it's amazing from a spectators point of view."

"Well the cars have less horsepower but they're aerodynamically more efficient so the speeds should be about the same or maybe a bit higher. In terms of a race winner, start with da Matta and work down: Paul (Tracy), Michael (Andretti), (Tony) Kanaan. It could be anybody."

"Yeah, I guess it is a bit frustrating to see him doing so well, but I think I'm having more fun doing what I'm doing."

"Ah, the F1 question. I've always said that I'd like to do Formula 1 and that's not changed. I know that it's not possible for me to jump into a Ferrari or a McLaren, but if the right opportunity came along I'd certainly be interested."

"Oh yes, absolutely. Actually I was given a Mercedes SL500 just the other day, so I still have good contacts there. I like the look of the current cars and I'd certainly consider racing them again at some point in the future."

"In America they now show the same World Rally highlights that you get in Britain and I think it's brilliant. I would have loved to have done the Rally Great Britain this year but unfortunately I'm racing that weekend."
