DAMS notches up third win in a row
DAMS took their third successive SportsRacing World Cup win when the Judd-powered Lola, driven by Frenchmen Gounon and Bernard, took a hard-fought victory over the pole-setting BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 333SP
Only 15 seconds separated the two cars when the chequered flag came down after two and a half hours of racing at the Nurburgring in Germany.
Championship leaders Collard and Sospiri were third, twenty seconds adrift in the JB Giesse Ferrari.
However, this allowed them to further increase their lead in the Drivers points classification.
Pescatori, who had given the BMS team its first pole position, lost out to Eric Bernard at the start, but kept up the battle, changing lead at the pit-stops.
Pescatori drove for three of the four stints, only handing over to his team-mate Moncini for the last section. This allowed Gounon to build up an advantage, and take the third win, despite carrying the maximum 50kg penalty weight.
'It was hard work in the 25° heat, but our strategy was good,' Gounon said.
'Eric did a great job fighting off Pescatori in the first half, then we put some seconds between our car and his. We worked hard for this one.'
Newcomers to the SRWC, Thomas Bscher and Pedro Lamy brought their BMW LM98 home in fourth place, ahead of the second JB Giesse car, driven by Italians Baldi and Angelelli.
Nielsen and Orbell, in the Kremer Lola, had a good race, setting the fastest lap.
They were lying fourth when a clutch problem forced them into retirement.
In the SR2 class, it looked as if the BMW-engined Turbomotor Sighinolfi would take the victory, until its engine blew fifteen minutes from the end of the race.
This gave Amati, Lancelotti and Knicz the win in their Tampolli Alfa Romeo, ahead of Henderson and Van Dyck, with Craggs, Chittenden and Catlow third.
The eighth round of the nine-race championship will take place at Magny Cours on September 19.
