Dakar unveils course details
The organisers of the Dakar rally unveiled on Thursday details of the course for the 29th edition of the event, which will start on 6th January
The rally will once again take off from Lisbon for a 8,696 kilometre road, including 5,010 kilometres of timed specials during the fourteen stages to be covered on their way to Dakar.
Following two special stages in Portugal, the rally will pass through Morocco, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal before arriving at Dakar on 20th January.
The following day, the remaining competitors will take part in the first Grand Prix du Lac Rose, a show race organised on a closed circuit on the beach where the traditional podium ceremony will be organised.
This year, the first dunes of the rally will show up earlier than usual, giving the first African stages additional difficulty.
Organisers said 250 bikers, 187 cars and 88 trucks will take the start in Lisbon.
To improve safety during the rally, a road safety campaign has been established by traffic specialists alongside the authorities of the countries welcoming the Dakar.
