Club Driver: Michael Caine
TVR Tuscan racer Michael Caine went into the 2000 season as championship favourite, but ended up fighting the bank manager as much as his on-track rivals. The title, and the accolade of Club Racing Driver of the Year, were both well deserved reward for the highly-rated sportscar racer.
While main rival Mike Jordan had to sacrifice several rounds to his British GT ambitions, Caine was struggling with a lack of funds that left his participation in each and every round under question. But in the end, four wins and 1211 points to Jordan's three victories and 988 points was more than enough to seal a well-deserved crown and a chance to move into British GTs for 2001.
Caine received his award from club racing legend Gerry Marshall, who reached the 600 victory mark in the 2000 season.
"Two weeks before the start of the season our main sponsor pulled out so things didn't look good," said Caine. "But getting this award is really top stuff."
Previous winners of the Club Driver of the Year include Eddie Irvine, David Coulthard and Dario Franchitti.
