Cheever's gloomy prediction

Outspoken IRL IndyCar Series team owner Eddie Cheever has predicted that the Champ Car World Series will continue to struggle under new owner OWRS, and that the eventual demise of the series is "inevitable."

OWRS was awarded the rights to the series after a long bankruptcy court hearing yesterday (Wednesday). The Indy Racing League had attempted to buy certain assets of the rival series, but its application was unsuccessful.

Cheever predicted an early end for OWRS, stating: "I believe it's inevitable. I'm sure a lot of fans of either side or people on their teams will say that's it's arrogant for me to say it's inevitable. But I don't really see how you can compete against the IRL. And, in many ways, against NASCAR.

"I feel like all they've really done is to prolong the agony of watching them founder around for another 12 or 24 months or however long it takes. Everybody was looking forward to the fact that there was going to be one series. It looks like it might take a little more time than we thought."
