CART's Toyota Atlantic cost-cutting measures

CART plans several new regulations in 2004 to reduce competitors' costs while promoting performance parity in its Toyota Atlantic 'feeder' series. Toyota Racing Development (TRD) has agreed to improve engine mileage between rebuilds, and an exclusive engine rebuild contractor will be appointed. In addition, the teams will have a limited number of off-season and on-season test days

CART will also invite tenders for the supply of 'spec' components such as the suspension dampers and limited-slip differentials.

"One of the biggest challenges every racing team faces - no matter what series they choose to contest - is putting together a proper budget to compete in a season," said CART Toyota Atlantic Championship president Vicki O'Connor. "While racing is inherently expensive, we've listened to our teams in their requests for assistance in reducing their budgets, and these new regulations are a direct response to their concerns.

"We feel that these regulations will provide balance to our fields and make it significantly easier for all teams to compete on relatively equal footing in 2004 and beyond."
