CART takes steps to keep its teams

In conjunction with its decision to maintain turbocharged engines for the next two years, CART has announced an incentive package for teams expected to save them over £1million per car annually.

The 'Entrant Support Programme' will provide teams with assistance in lowering the costs of engine leasing, freight and travel expenses, tyres and hospitality parking rates. Fees associated with open tests and race entry will also be covered by the programme, which will be limited to 20 teams.

A second-tier ESP will provide two more entries with overseas travel expenses.

"We're sure this programme will provide our teams with maximum value and ensure their continued participation in the CART series," said CART's Vice-President of Race Operations John Lopes. "Management is sending a message to our teams that we are serious about keeping them in our paddock and removing barriers of entry for new teams."

CART CEO Chris Pook said he hopes to be able to announce a tentative 2003 entry list in the next 60 days.

"We have not asked for commitments from our teams," said Pook. "We're giving our existing teams a chance to sign up first. We have to respect the guys already running in our series. But there is interest from new teams and we're asking to see proof of funding"
