CART takes measures to slow cars

A series of rule changes designed to slow the Champ Cars on the fast, high-banked Texas Motor Speedway have been brought in at the 11th-hour after warnings that race speeds on the 1.5-mile oval could have touched 238mph in the draft.

CART's Vice-President of Competition Kirk Russell and Chief Steward Chris Kneifel issued a Competition Bulletin early on race morning (Sunday) detailing a number of mandatory changes.

Team Rahal's Kenny Brack earned pole position for the 600-kilometre event at over 233mph, and insiders had predicted race speeds of up to 238 mph due to the draft effect of the cars running in packs.

CART has stipulated that all teams must now run a non-adjustable 1.5-inch rear wicker (Gurney tab) on the Handford Device rear wing. In addition, the CART-issued pop-off valves will be recalibrated to operate at 36 inches of turbo boost, a reduction of one inch.

The race day schedule has been revised to guarantee all teams 30 minutes of green flag practice time to prepare their cars to race in the revised configuration.

Full details and reactions after the morning warm-up session.
