CART confirms chassis freeze
Champ Car governing body CART has confirmed that it will continue to run the current chassis formula next year instead of switching to Indy Racing League rules
The decision was voted on by the team owners at the Motegi race at the end of last month. The U-turn follows concerns about rising costs, although CART claims that driver safety was the key factor, with modern Champ Cars having strong driver protection records on ovals, road courses and street tracks.
British constructor Lola has reaffirmed its commitment to CART. With Reynard having gone out of business, Lola could be the sole Champ Car chassis and parts supplier in 2003.
CART vice-president John Lopes said: "We've spoke with several chassis manufacturers, and as we have always done at CART, we are committed to an open market for 2003 and beyond. We are still talking with other manufacturers, but we are pleased that Lola has already committed to returning to CART in 2003."
No mention was made of what engine formula will be used. But it is expected that CART will switch to motors based on the IRL's 3.5-litre V8s, as was previously planned.
