Buurman livid with Algarve penalty

Superleague Formula frontrunner Yelmer Buurman has attacked the decision to give him a drive-through penalty in Sunday's opening race at Circuit do Algarve, claiming that he was not given a warning flag like his similarly-penalised rival Andy Soucek before it was applied

AC Milan's Buurman, who entered the race just three points behind series leader Craig Dolby of Tottenham Hotspur, had charged from 13th to fourth, but was given a drive-through for crossing the white line at the exit of Turn 3. Instead of gaining points, the penalty puts him 18 points behind new leader Davide Rigon of Anderlecht.

"It's really stupid," Buurman complained of his penalty. "I was behind Soucek, and I was quicker than him. But every time I pressed the push-to-pass, he pushed his too, but I always had one more than him so I was just waiting until the end to use it.

"At Turn 3 he was crossing the white line at exit. I was behind him, losing grip, and I didn't realise I crossed it too. He got a warning on the straight, I saw his number 4 not my number 3.

"He had a warning, but I had a drive-though too, like it was out of the sky. Where was my warning? I'm really p****d off. It put me down in 10th again."

Buurman was not helped by his radio being difficult to hear, and he initially believed only Soucek was penalised until the team shouted at him to pit as well.
